UK ultra athlete Alex Welch makes history with record-breaking win in arctic ultramarathon
UK ultra athlete Alex Welch has made history by winning the Beyond the Ultimate Arctic 2025, one of the world’s toughest ultramarathons.
The gruelling five-day, 230km race through the frozen landscapes of Swedish Lapland saw Alex not only claim victory but also set two stage records and finish just around 60 minutes shy of the overall course record.
Alex’s triumph cements his place among the world’s elite endurance athletes. At 29 years old, he becomes the youngest-ever winner of the race, beating the previous record of 31. His victory comes less than a year after finishing 30th in the Marathon des Sables, a brutal multi-day ultramarathon across the Sahara Desert.
Alex’s journey has been defined by resilience, self-discipline, and a relentless drive to push his physical and mental limits. Having faced setbacks earlier in his career, including a medical withdrawal from the Marathon des Sables in 2021, he used that disappointment as fuel to return stronger.
On his remarkable achievement, Alex Welch said:
“It’s overwhelming to get the result that I ultimately trained for. Despite facing several challenges outside of just running, I was mentally versatile enough to deal with what was thrown at me.
