Competition Heats up for VR Chipset Dominance

Virtual-RealityThe race to dominate the chip market for virtual-reality headsets is heating up. Gartner forecasts VR headset shipments will rise from 1.4 million units this year to 6.3 million units in 2017 and key chipset developers are lining up to compete for the most successful vendors of consumer and business-oriented solutions. While several VR developers are making use of AMD GPU technology, Samsung has used Qualcomm chips in its gear VR offering and the forthcoming Microsoft HoloLens uses a low-power Intel processor, code-named Cherry Trail and originally designed for tablets.
