A Government Authority
Remarketing devices to improve employee satisfaction and generate revenue.
The Government Authority has been working with SCC for many years, with SCC winning a competitive tender process via the Crown Commercial Service Framework ‘Technology Products and Associated Services’ (RM6068) for the supply of End User Compute services including device recycling and disposal. During the initial contract and engagement the Authority chose to retire devices to be disposed of rather than remarketed as they concerns about the security of devices going onto other users outside of their organisation.
Solution Overview
As our relationship developed into a trusted partnership, SCC’s supply chain specialist worked with the Authority to guide them and assuage their security concerns by demonstrating SCC’s capability to fully erase data bearing devices. This allowed the Authority to move to a remarketing model which would help them accrue revenue from the devices they no longer required. To ensure a safe transition whilst promoting business continuity, SCC created two service streams to run side by side, offering the customer both the option to dispose of assets or remarket them into the second user market.
In addition to these two service streams, SCC were also preprovisioning and configuring new devices for the Authority to replace the old kit which had been collected for disposal/remarketing. Through partnership and communication, SCC and the Authority developed a streamlined solution which allowed the two services (preprovisioning and remarketing) to be combined, to create a singular process. where old devices were collected, data bearing elements erased and/or destroyed and then the device was sent into configuration for an OEM operating system load and test, before the device was made purchasable to the authority’s employees. This differed from SCC’s standard model of remarketing and destruction as normally no operating system is left on the device. However, by preprovisioning the devices they were able to go on to a second user from the Authority.
This Employee Purchase Scheme was an evolution of the current service SCC delivered to the Authority. It allows Authority users to log on and purchase remarketed devices at a discounted rate from a non-public landing page on our SCC trade website. The page contains the authorities branding and logo and is only accessible by whitelisted users who have registered and logged in on the trade site with an email address containing the Authority’s domain. From the website users can purchase iPads, iPhones, Mac, Lenovo, Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices, with all devices coming with a 30 day warranty. Prior to resale, SCC provides an asset managed auditable remarketing service from our Recyclea facility, where all devices are data wiped, have any other identifiers removed via a de-etching process, are restored and cleaned prior to being stored ready for resale. To assure the Authority of the security of the remarketing process, an auditable certificate of sanitisation is provided for every device processed.
If after an agreed period of time (30 days) a device has not sold to one of the Authority’s employees, the device becomes available on the main SCC Trade website, allowing for second user purchase. This ensures devices are not depreciating in value whilst waiting to be purchased and ensures the Authority receives the maximum value back from the device sale.
Outcome
The benefit of the Employee Purchase Scheme to the Authority, is that it allows them to add additional revenue to their budget, it also promotes the circular economy and supports their Environmental Social Governance (ESG) commitments. One of the main benefits was to social value, by giving their employees a positive employee experience.
For the Authority, the Employee Purchase Scheme has generated over £100,000 from the sale of 3,000+ remarketed devices within the first year of going live. Over 1600 items have been purchased by Authority users. The scheme continues to deliver higher than expected revenues when compared to SCC’s normal remarketing channels.
